RAWsome Treats Fit for Spiderman

Check out this little cutie eating his Green Tara Energy Bites.  He's one happy camper!  He asked what was in them and his mom told him the ingredient list:  spirulina (a plant from a lake), banana, sesame seeds & coconut, to which he replied, "I didn't know bananas came in green squares!" And then he asked if Spiderman eats them...

RAWK ON!  And thanks, Green Tara for sharing your fab treats with us.  They are rawsome!

Spirulina Treats in the Fairy House

We have a fairy house that adorns our walls and it is home to two lovely fairies named Madeline & Harry.  These fairies love kids and they leave my niece and nephew little notes every week and an occasional gift too.  This week there were lots of squeals when Avery arrived to discover Madeline & Harry had left a present.

Green Tara Energy Bites were waiting for her & she couldn't have been happier.  Madeline & Harry wrote her a little note on the packaging and explained that spirulina is a a fresh water algae that is so good for us ... it's a rawtastic source of protein and also contains iron, calcium, magnesium & all kinds of other vitamins & minerals.  The fairies said that they loved these treats and that they thought she and her brother would like them too.

Avery opened the packet and she and her brother sampled them. And of course, they liked them too!  Yummmm!

THANK YOU, GREEN TARA for sharing your spirulina energy bites with the fairies in our home & the kids who visit.

Green Poop & Plant Pee ... JUICING with kids!

Who knew the juicer would bring so much joy to these 2 kids!?  I mean they LOVE this thing!!!!!!!!  I asked my niece for help juicing--she pretty much loves to help with anything I do in the kitchen & the next thing I know, I have my 19 month old nephew crawling up on a stool to pitch in too.

The funny thing about using the juicer is that it was so intuitive for them.  Of course, they have seen it in action before & my niece has certainly helped me on different occasions, but this time, they just took over & needed very little guidance.  It was the cutest thing! <3  They would have juiced & juiced & juiced ... too bad I ran out of fruits & veggies!

I think what they love about it is seeing something go in whole & come out  as "green poop" & "plant pee" to use the words of my niece.  And of course it tastes good too!  The last thing she said to me before her dad came to get her was, "Can we make juice EVERY Wednesday?"  OF COURSE!!!!!!

The juice we made was a carrot fruit juice:
2 carrots
1 apple
1 pear
1/4 cup of cranberries
Note:  they also like sweet green juices

Apple Peelers & Cranberry Apple Sauce

If you have kids in your life & don't have an apple peeler, I highly recommend getting one!  They cost about $25 & will give you lots of good times in the kitchen.  You can slice & peel dozens of apples in no time at all to use in apple pies, cobblers, dehydrated apple slices, apple sauces & just for eating plain.  The options are endless & it's such a fun tool.  Kids love the apple peeler!  My little helper peeled four apples yesterday & would have kept going if we had had more apples to peel.  :-)

Once we peeled the apples I asked Avery to help me create a delicious new recipe.  We brainstormed for a minute & then threw our ingredients into the blender to work its magic.  We decided on a cranberry apple sauce & the outcome is delicious!  See recipe below & ENJOY!

Dempsey Challenge 2011

We were set up at the Dempsey Challenge in Lewiston making rawsome SUPER HERO smoothies & rawkin' applesauce in the KidZone on Oct 8th & 9th & we had so much fun!  It was great to connect with Dempsey Challenge participants & their families over a celebration of healthy living through nutrition & physical activity.

The rawsome snack shack was a big hit!  There were lots of adorable green smoothie mustaches going on & lots of smiles over the apple sauce.
The Dempsey Challenge is an INCREDIBLE event!  WOW ... it is so organized & thoughtfully put together & the staff & volunteers were out-of-this-world!  We were in awe of all that happened here & grateful to have been a part of the festivities!  THANK YOU!

Let the Kids Shop

I picked my 4 year old niece up from school yesterday & asked her what she wanted to do on this beautiful afternoon.  "Go to the Market," she said.  I think she was reading my mind.  :-)  Off to the Market we went with her little brother in tow.

We parked, loaded the sleeping brother into the stroller, grabbed a shopping bag & away we went.  As we were walking to the market I asked her what she was most excited to get & she said, "TOMATOES!"

First things first, we went on the perfect cherry tomato hunt.  We found a display of little orange tomatoes, red tomatoes, mutli-colored tomatoes ... and after much deliberation, she picked out a pint of bright red cherry tomaotes.  They were so yummy & disappeared so quickly that I never got a picture of her enjoying them.  I did however get some pictures of the remainder of our shopping experience.  :-)

My niece had so much fun helping me pick out produce, take it to the farmers to weigh & then pay for it that I thought she was going to explode!  And she learned a lot too.  We talked about veggies & what we can make with them, we talked about weighing food & money to pay for it.

The cutest thing was that when she woke up from an afternoon nap, the first thing she said to my partner was, "I got to buy food at the Farmers' Market all by myself!"  She then got up & helped me unpack the food & arrange it in a huge bowl on the kitchen counter.  Happiness is ...

Let the kids shop, I say!  Take them to a Farmers' Market near you ... it makes for a great outing for everyone!

Smiles,  :-)  Elizabeth, aka Girl Gone Raw
